Once again this year we will be supporting the UK-wide Potatoes for Schools campaign run by the Potato Council, visiting local schools to help get them started with their projects.
The team from Fenmarc and sister company Agrimarc kicked off the project by visiting Friday Bridge Primary School, along with their company mascot Potato Pete. Class 3 listened to a presentation given by Agrimarc’s Innovations Manger Jonathan Pearson. He talked about the history of potatoes and how they are grown and packed for the supermarkets, together with insider tips for growing the biggest plants and bumper harvests.
Primed with information, the kids eagerly planted their potato seeds and took in more ideas about plant care. “I was really impressed by how enthusiastic the children were,” said Jonathan. “They know what to do and are going to keep us updated on their progress; it’ll be exciting to see the result of their hard work and efforts in a couple of months.”
Sue Lawton of the Potato Council said: “Grow Your Own Potatoes really helps teachers to educate pupils about the role of potatoes in a healthy diet. 450,000 pupils are being challenged to plant, grow and harvest the heaviest yield of potatoes this year – making it our most successful year ever. The Potato Council is keen to support primary schools nationwide as Grow your Own Potatoes provides so many learning opportunities for children, but we would not be able to achieve this without industry support. We’d like to thank companies like Fenmarc for the support and enthusiasm they bring to the project."
We will also be visiting the following schools, with more to be confirmed in the weeks to come; watch this space for further details and information!.
